WELCOME TO TDPF SCOTLAND
TDPF (Transform Drug Policy Foundation) Scotland was founded in January 2009 by cousins Jolene Crawford and Katrina Robertson after the tragic death of a family member.
Working closely with Transform, www.tdpf.org.uk based in Bristol, TDPF Scotland is focussing on Scottish issues and policy. We aim to provide an informed and clear voice in the public and media debate on Scottish drug policy. We will challenge the Scottish Government to demonstrate rational, fact-based evidence to support its policies and expenditure and we will promote alternative, evidence-based policies to parliamentarians, government and government agencies in Scotland. We aim also to provide a focal point in Scotland that can link up with the considerable growth of similar organisations and debate in many countries around the world.
TDPF Scotland exists to improve the lives of drug users, their families and society as a whole by reducing the danger and harm associated with illegal drugs by ending blanket prohibition in favour of better control through regulation. We want to bring about an open, educated and evidence-based discussion regarding alternative drug policies and the possibilities and problems of ending prohibition.
It is a tragedy that it took the death of a loved one to get us to ‘see the light’ on how to deal with the drug problem here in Scotland, and throughout rest of the world. But as soon as we did some research and looked at the facts it became immediately apparent that the drugs aren’t the problem – it is their illegality that is. The solution? Regulate and Control. We also know that this is a belief held by many prominent people behind closed doors, but who are too scared to speak out about it in public. The result is that we are stuck with a system that costs billions to enforce, and that achieves the exact opposite of it’s stated aims.
Our aim is to raise awareness of the issues surrounding the regulation and control of currently illegal drugs, and to help foster the conditions for an open and honest debate on the subject in Scotland. We hope to bring about a positive change for Scotland and it’s communities by reducing the harm, including the levels of crime and chaos, from the lives of those affected by drug problems.
We are extremely lucky to be assisted by numerous informed, enthusiastic and supportive individuals, but in particular by: Mike McCarron, Scotland’s leading drug policy expert and Jim Duffy, retired Inspector of Strathclyde Police, and now an active member of LEAP (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition).
